Numb State
Numb State by Maria Turchenkova is the winning project in the Highlights section of the Deloitte Photo Grant 2026. A deep visual investigation that since 2014 has traversed Russian territory to tell the story of the silent legacy of Soviet violence. Through years of travel across the country and iconic imagery – such as passengers asleep on the Trans-Siberian Railway – Turchenkova explores how an unaddressed historical trauma resurfaces in everyday life, manifesting as conformity and moral paralysis within a society shaped by fear.

Biography
Born in Moscow in 1987, Turchenkova is a documentary photographer whose work explores the effects of war and the relationship between memory and space. She studied visual arts in Russia and France, and participated in international workshops. She is a fellow of the Paul Klebnikov Civil Society Program at Columbia University’s Harriman Institute. She has developed indipendent projects and undertaken editorial assignments for various publications in Ukraine, the North Caucasus, and the Middle East. Her work has appeared in Le Monde, The New York Times, and TIME Magazine, and has been exhibited internationally. She lives and works in Paris.
